The Peterborough Midget AA
Ice Kats played in the 2 Nations Showcase Tournament in Detroit, Michigan over
the weekend, which featured 30 teams from Canada and the USA, and posted a
record of 3 wins, 1 tie and 1 loss.
Peterborough started the tournament Friday morning facing a strong Philadelphia Jr. Flyers squad. Peterborough scored a late goal but fell 4-2. Talia Flint and Avery Johnson scored the Peterborough goals, with assists by Ava Flint, Alana Jentas, Charlotte Porter and Maddy O’Neill-Hawthorne.
The Ice Kats battled the St. Louis Blues in their second game. In a tight match, Hannah Kawalec scored late in the 3rd period to secure a 2-1 win. Ava Flint scored the other goal, assisted by Kawalec.
On Saturday morning, the Ice Kats defeated the Gentry Galaxy from Minnesota 3-1, with goals by Taylor Richmond, Charlotte Porter, and Elyse Ives. Assists went to Ava Smith, Hannah Healey, O’Neill-Hawthorne, Jentas and Kawalec.
Peterborough completed the round robin play Saturday afternoon with a game against Chicago Young Americans, playing to a 1-1 tie. Avery Johnson scored the lone Peterborough goal, assisted by Hannah Healey.
The Ice Kats completed the tournament playing Sunday morning against the Burlington Barracudas. Peterborough fell behind 1-0 in the 1st period before storming back with 4 straight goals for a 4-1 win. Ice Kat goals were scored by Kawalec (2), Richmond and Johnson, with Richmond, O’Neill-Hawthorne (2), Healey and Kawalec registering assists.
Maddy Roche and Bella Smolen provided solid goaltending for the Ice Kats throughout the tournament.
Peterborough returns to league play this week with a home and home series against the Kingston Ice Wolves.
