Midget B's Bring Home the Gold
The Peterborough Midget B Icekats went undefeated in the Clarington Applefest Tournament this weekend, to take home the gold medal.
This team out-skated and out-worked the Georgina Golden Hawks in every area of the game to earn this well deserving victory. After a bit of a slow start by the Icekats, Georgina took an early 1-0 lead. This just proved to be a wake up call for the Icekats. Shortly after getting down by one, captain Megan Gordon made an impressive end to end rush, deking out many Georgina players and potting a perfectly placed backhander by the goalie.
Quickly after that from a scrum in front of the Georgina net, and after a couple of rebounds, the puck squirted to the side of the net to Elizabeth Semlitch. It looked like she had no room to put the puck in the net, but she lifted a lazer sharp shot in the top of the net just inside the far post.
Taking a 2-1 lead into the second period, the Icekats started to shut the Hawks down, but just for good measure, Jenna DeNoble snuck past the Georgina defense for a break-away, and while holding off the defenders, she hammered home a sweet shot through the goalies five-hole, adding a much appreciated insurance goal.
With a perfect defensive team effort in the third period, and great goaltending from Hallie Rivet, the Icekats completely shut down the Golden Hawks to preserve the 3-1 victory and win the gold medal.
The entire team played fantastic all weekend, winning some hard fought games to win the round robin portion of the tournament and get a pass directly to the gold medal game.
