The Peterborough King’s Auto
Wreckers Midget AA Ice Kats entered the weekend sitting in the middle of the
pack in the 9-team Eastern Conference of the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League,
facing consecutive games against the top three divisional teams.
On Saturday, the Midget AA Ice Kats traveled to Kingston to play the 3rd place Ice Wolves at the Invista Centre. The game remained scoreless until early in the 2nd period, with the Ice Kats striking first. Centre Abby Cassidy carried the puck into the Kingston zone on a 2 on 1, making a nice pass to Alicia Wake on the left side. Wake fired low blocker side for the Ice Kats goal. Kingston battled back, tying the game in the middle of the 3rd period with a slap shot from the right side into the top left corner of the Ice Kats net. Peterborough wasn’t done however, with Hannah Kawalec taking a pass from Grace Adie-Berube and firing a slap shot from the Kingston blue line. The puck hit a Kingston defender in front of the net and bounced past the Kingston netminder. Kingston got into penalty trouble late in the game and Peterborough was able to hang on for a 2-1 win. Maddy Roche played a solid game in the Ice Kat net.
On Sunday, the Midget AA Ice Kats hosted 2nd place Durham West at the Kinsmen arena. In a tight defensive battle, the Ice Kats scored the lone goal in the middle of the match, with Skylar McArthur chipping in a rebound, assisted by Lauren Bell and Adie-Berube. Amanda Storey posted the Ice Kats shutout.
On Monday the Midget AA Ice Kats traveled to the McKinney arena to face the undefeated 1st place Whitby Wolves. Peterborough battled hard but gave up goals in the 2nd and 3rd periods, losing 2-0.
Coach Mark McArthur was very pleased with the effort put forth by his team in all three games, saying “Anytime you can grab 4 of a possible 6 points playing the top teams in the league, you know you have had a successful weekend”.
Peterborough plays three more league games before the Christmas break, starting with an away game against the Clarington Flames on Thursday.
