Congratulations to the Peewee BB Ice Kats for their upset
win over the Belleville Bearcats in their LLFHL East first round match up.
The Kats opened the series with a 2-2 tie on the road in Game 1. Kiera Fife scored the first goal with assists to Lauren Jeffrey and Delaney Hancock. Ashtyn Hickey buried a Taylor Yanagdiara rebound to record the second goal. Alexis Tataryn added an assist.
The girls returned to Belleville for Game 2 where they defeated the Bearcats 2-0 in one of their strongest defensive efforts of the season. The Kats stormed out to a quick 1-0 lead on a goal by Taylor Yanagdiara who banged in a Tieler Laurie rebound. Ashtyn Hickey added an assist. Delaney Hancock tipped a beautiful pass from Hickey over the shoulder of the goaltender to increase the lead to 2-0. The team refused to surrender the lead by repeatedly frustrating the Belleville shooters with tenacious checking in all three zones. Courtney Townson and Hannah McKenzie provided shutout goaltending to earn the win.
Hancock scored an early goal on a breakaway following a blocked shot to stake the Kats to an early lead in Game 3 and set the tone for another strong team effort. The girls earned a hard fought 1-1 tie by repelling the determined Belleville attack & securing the series victory with 4 points. Hannah McKenzie was solid in net to earn the tie.
