Wreckers Midget AA Ice Kats advanced to the 2nd round of the East
Division Playoffs after winning the deciding 1st round game in a
shootout.
After losing 1-0 in Game 1 of the series in Kingston, the Ice Kats hosted the Kingston Ice Wolves at the Evinrude Centre on Saturday.
In a tight contest, Lauren Bell scored unassisted after throwing the puck to the Kingston net from the left corner midway through the 2nd period. The puck struck the Kingston goalie’s stick and slid between her pads for the goal.
Kingston battled hard in trying to tie the game, but Peterborough held strong. Kate Taylor scoring an empty net insurance marker with 13 seconds left in the match, assisted by Hannah Kawalec and Sydney Paulson. Ice Kats goalie Amanda Storey registered the shutout in the 2-0 win.
The Ice Kats traveled to the Invista Centre in Kingston on Sunday afternoon to play in the deciding game. Both teams had several good scoring chances during the 3 periods of regulation, as well as 10 minutes of sudden victory 4 on 4, but both goalies stopped everything thrown at them.
In the shootout, Ice Kat goaltender Amanda Storey stopped 3 out of 4 Kingston shooters, while Kate Taylor and Hannah Kawalec were able to score for the Ice Kats, securing the win for Peterborough.
The Midget AA Ice Kats will now play the Markham-Stouffville Stars in the 2nd round.
